As I try to defrag or run a registry cleaning program, my computer will freeze or lockup in the middle of the process. Sometimes after leaving the computer on for a few minutes, the same results will happen. 1. Don't run the registry cleaning program any more (except for #2).2. Use the registry cleaning program's undo function to restore your computer to the way it was before this issue started. Alternatively, use your disk image backup to do the same. After you do this, uninstall the registry cleaning program and throw it away.3. If the issue persists, open Task Manager and see what process is hogging the CPU.

Hi Hurling,Welcome to Answers,As I undertand you are unable to perform Disk defrag is that correct ?Most possible causes may be,· HDD might have bad sectors· HDD might be damaged· Less HDD free spaceBefore we jump into solution few quick questions,1. Have you tried any troubleshooting steps2. Have you tried performing CHKDSK3. Does this happen even while running multiple application(Multitasking)4. Have you tried Defrag in Safemode Suggested Steps which you can try,Step 1:Perform a clean boot Note: If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from following these steps. We strongly recommend that you do not use the System Configuration utility to modify the advanced boot options on the computer unless a Microsoft support engineer directs you to do this. Doing this might make the computer unusable. · Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.· Click the Start button, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start the System Configuration Utility.· On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable).· On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all. Note: Following this step lets Microsoft services continue to run. These services include Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, Error Reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you may permanently delete all restore points. Do not do this if you want to use the System Restore utility together with existing restore points. · Click OK, and then click Restart. After this try to check if you can run Defrag.Step 2:If you are still not able to run Defrag follow below steps, · Restart your PC and keep tapping F8 Key to enter into advanced options.· Select “Safe Mode” from options.· Once enter into your desktop follow below steps. Step A : Disk cleanup:· Click onStart, and then click Run. · In theOpen box, type cleanmgr, then click OK.· Once the process scans and provide how much you can space can be freed.· Select the required fields and selectOK. Step B:· click onStart and select Run· Type CMD in Run window and you get Black window.· Now type chkdsk /f Note: there is a space between the chkdsk and/f. A black box appears and says "Would you like the volumn to be checked next time you start the computer" type Y click enter. Now reboot. A light blue check list screen appears and will work through 3 options, when it finds the problem it will slow down. Do not touch anything it will automatically continue to boot to Windows. You can now defrag Regards, Chandra Shekar G Please reply at your convenience for better assistance.
